February 2007
Tournaments
Not much activity on the tournament front at the moment, however the Welsh ran their annual Open Tournament in Aberystwyth on the 17th and 18th February. Closing date for applications was 12th January, but if you wish to enter next year, details are available on the catchy website of http://www.gigaflop.demon.co.uk/volley/wopen.htm
If you have any photos or a report of any tournament, they can be sent to coach@thevolleyball.net
Rumours are growing that the 2007 Gloucester tournament will introduce a beach court as the county council is keen to use 250 tonnes of excess sand they found in their back yard. For further details of tournaments, please go to the Events section.

Nottingham Volleyball Tournament is well on the way to being organised, with applications starting in March. A general announcement will be made in March, but if you want to be first in line, send a quick email to nvt@thevolleyball.net requesting an entry form. Weird Volleyball news from around the world…
You are being watched…
Japanese games developer Tecmo has warned of legal action against anyone who published information rendering the women in Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball completely nude during gameplay. “We're watching you very closely! Please do not post things that infringe copyrights and other legal issues,” said the firm on its official website. Apparently webgeeks first applied the hack to the Tomb Raider games.
The Volleyball Workout
An interesting report from the Sunday Tasmanian (a regular read in the
UK) compared beach volleyball to an aerobic work. They forgot to mention its more fun to watch…
“While beach volleyball shares a few similarities with its traditional counterpart, it's a much more active workout -- one that gives your whole body a thorough whipping -- and one that will have you grinning at the end of a game. Bypassing the traditional six-a-side teams, beach volleyball is usually played by two very physical pairs, who race around the court, whacking the ball over the net. It's a tough workout that's aerobic, because of the fast starts and intense movements, and, depending on how long a rally lasts, it's also a hot aerobic workout that's just right for increasing your cardiovascular fitness. The sand is a great place to work out, mainly because of its instability. When you're on the sand you're really focusing on your core strength, and the unstable surface helps improve your balance too.”
Lose that Beer Belly
A great idea reported by the Newcastle Herald:
Patrons at the Wickham Park Hotel won't have to worry about growing unsightly beer bellies. The pub is now offering volleyball games along with its usual brews. The pub is converting its car park into a beach volleyball court and will hold matches on Sunday afternoons. The grandstand is already built and more than 70 tonnes of sand will be delivered in the coming weeks. Barry Morton of Wickham Park Hotel is hoping to finalise teams by the end of the month. "It's outside the square," he said of his volleyball initiative. "There will be a bit of physical activity before they drink now." Team nomination forms can be picked up at the pub.
